Case Studies 2: Security Issues

Problem

A printer can often be the weak link in your secure chain. For example, most Brother printers support a last page/last job reprint capability. This allows the printer to re-print the last page or print job it received without the job having to be re-sent from the PC. While this feature is useful for the majority of users, we appreciate that for some users, this convenience can cause security problems. To resolve, these and other security issues, Brother has introduced several important new capabilities to our printer line-up.

Solution #1: Reprint Off function

The re-print function can be disabled or enabled from the printer control panel. To completely disable the re-print function, Brother have developed special drivers for our corporate customers which ensure that the re-print function is disabled at all times.

Solution #2: Secure Printing

The majority of Brother printers with LCD control panels, support secure printing. With our secure printing capabilities, the printer can only re-print the last page or print job, if the user enters their personal PIN number onto the printer LCD panel. Solution #3: Lockable Compact Flash slot

Brother was one of the first manufacturers to support Compact Flash media. This support allowed the storage fonts and macros on a single Compact Flash card. However, one organization requested that the compact flash card should be locked so that it couldn't be removed. Brother developed a special Compact Flash cover to prevent the removal of a compact flash card.

Conclusion

Brother printers already offer built in secure printing capabilities. However our printers can be modified to further enhance our secure printing solutions.
