Installing a Brother driver file into a CUPS based Linux
system
After download the appropriate Brother non-BRScript driver enter the
following command to uncompress and install it.
Note for Debian Users:
Other models cannot be installed on Debian linux. In order to install
plural models on debian, follow this instruction. dpkg --force-overwrite
xxxxxx
rpm -ivh --nodeps drivername
For example:
rpm -ivh --nodeps br7050_2-1.0.0-0-noarch.rpm
Now proceed from step 2
Launch your web browser and enter:
http://localhost:631
(If you are using a Proxy server, make sure you bypass the proxy
server for local addresses). A screen similar to the one show
will be displayed.
To add a printer click "Manage Printers"
Click the "Add Printer" button.
Enter the appropriate username and password.
Enter a Name, Location and Description.
Specify the communications port to use:
There are 3 valid options:
LPD/LPR Host or Printer (use this option if you wish to
print over a network). USB Printer #1 (If you are printing using the USB interface) Parallel Port #1 (If you are printing using the parallel
interface)
If you are sending your print jobs over a TCP/IP network there
are several possible entries in the:
"Device URI"
Enter this URI if you are using the "lpr/lpd" protocols
to print over a network.
Select "Brother" and click "Continue".
Select the appropriate model (ex. Brother HL-1850/70N
for cups (en)
)
and click "Continue".
Note:
Make sure from any Linux applications you use are configured to use the
CUPS printer driver. For example, in the screen shot below you can see
that the "Print system currently used" setting to set to use
the "CUPS" driver:
