Installing a Brother BR-Script PPD file into a CUPS based Linux system

Make sure that the printer is connected to the parallel, USB or network interface and proceed from step 1.

  1. Copy the PPD file in the bundled CD-ROM of your product to
    /usr/share/cups/model/.

    i.e)
    /Driver/PS/HLxxxx/PPD
 
  1. Make sure that the CUPS daemon is started. To do this open a new terminal window and enter:

    /etc/rc.d/init.d/cups restart

    Please note: if you do not restart the CUPS daemon then any PPD files you copy into Linux may not be displayed.
service cups restart
  1. Launch your web browser and enter:

    http://localhost:631

    (If you are using a Proxy server, make sure you bypass the proxy server for local addresses). A screen similar to the one show will be displayed.

    To add a printer click "Manage Printers"

  1. Click the "Add Printer" button.

  1. Enter the appropriate username and password.

  1. Enter a Name, Location and Description.

  1. Specify the communications port to use:

There are 3 valid options:

LPD/LPR Host or Printer (use this option if you wish to print over a network).
USB Printer #1 (If you are printing using the USB interface)
Parallel Port #1 (If you are printing using the parallel interface)

If you are sending your print jobs over a TCP/IP network there are several possible entries in the:

"Device URI"

lpd: specific information
Enter this URI if you are using the "lpr/lpd" protocols to print over a network.

  1. Select "Brother" and click "Continue".

  1. Select the appropriate model and click "Continue".

  1. Your printer is ready to print.

    Before you print you should configure which optional items are installed on your printer. To learn how to do this, click here.
 

Note:
Make sure from any Linux applications you use are configured to use the CUPS printer driver. For example, in the screen shot below you can see that the "Print system currently used" setting to set to use the "CUPS" driver:
